When & How to Use Ibuprofen for Children’s Pain and Fever

Introduction

At Oberon Pharmacy, we know that when your child is in pain or running a fever, it can be stressful and worrying. Our friendly pharmacists are here to help—7 days a week—to guide you on the safest and most effective way to use ibuprofen for your child. Whether you drop in or give us a quick call, we can talk you through the correct dose, timing, and when it might be time to see a doctor.

1. What Is Ibuprofen & How Does It Work?

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing inflammation (the source of pain) and lowering fever. Nurofen for Children offers age-appropriate options, such as oral suspensions for 3 months–12 years and soft chewable capsules for 7–12 years, making it easier to give to kids.

Our pharmacists can help you choose the right product based on your child’s weight and symptoms—because no two kids are the same.

2. Choosing the Right Nurofen Product

  • 3 months to 5 years: 100 mg/5 mL

(strawberry/orange flavours)—ideal for teething, earaches, sore throats, fever including post- immunisation, cold & flu symptoms, and minor aches.

  • 5 to 12 years: 200 mg/5 mL—same uses, but in a more concentrated formula.

Our advice: Always measure using the provided syringe for accuracy. If you’re unsure about the dose, bring your child’s weight (or your child!) in and we can check it for you on the spot.

  • 7–10 years: 2 capsules per dose
  • 10–12 years: 3 capsules per dose

Doses for all forms are given every 6–8 hours as needed, up to 3 doses in 24 hours.

3. Following Trusted Guidelines

We follow recommendations from the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Nurofen for Children dosing guides:

  • Always use weight-based dosing where possible.
  • Do not give ibuprofen for more than 48 hours without checking with a healthcare professional.
  • Keep track of when doses are given—especially if alternating with paracetamol.

If you’re worried at any point, we’re just a phone call away. We can help you check whether your child’s dose is safe, or if it’s time to see a doctor.

4. Safety Tips from Our Pharmacists

  • Read the label every time—even if you’ve used ibuprofen before.
  • Give with food or milk if your child has a sensitive tummy.
  • Never use kitchen spoons—use the supplied syringe or cup.
  • Store medicines in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.

We’re happy to provide a free dose chart tailored to your child’s weight—just ask at the counter.

5. When to Seek Help Quickly

  • If your child’s symptoms last more than 48 hours without improvement.
  • If your child vomits after medication or has stomach pain or unusual drowsiness.
  • If you suspect an overdose, call the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26) immediately.

Our pharmacists can also triage and point you to the nearest medical care if needed.

6. Combining with Paracetamol

Sometimes, ibuprofen alone doesn’t fully control pain or fever. Alternating with paracetamol can help—but it’s easy to lose track of doses. Come in and we’ll help you make a written schedule so you can give both safely.

7. A Holistic Approach

We encourage parents to use comfort measures alongside medication—such as rest, fluids, cuddles, and distraction techniques. Medicine can help with symptoms, but comfort helps children feel secure and cared for.

Example Dosing Table (Liquid Form)

Weight (kg) Dose (mg) Example Product Strength Volume (mL)

10–14 kg 100 mg 100 mg/5 mL 5 mL

14–20 kg 150 mg 100 mg/5 mL 7.5 mL

20–29 kg 200 mg 200 mg/5 mL 5 mL

Tip: Weight is more accurate than age for dosing—if you’re unsure, pop into Oberon Pharmacy and we’ll weigh your child for free.
